Author Topic: HCR Maintenance close call  (Read 5193 times)

Pulled the bike down after the weekends HCR ride having noticed a drive chain noise and not much rear brake.
Turned out the rear brake pads are shot and the front sprocket nut was loosed held only by the folded over washer.
The front sprocket is also on the way out.

Rear brakes 1mm to spare

Front sprocket on the way out

Having done regular maintenance the HCR distances put a strain on the machine unlike other rides nearer to town.
This was a timely reminder for me to do more diligent maintenance prior to riding in the High Country given the state the bike came back in after one 200K HCR ride day.

Gee Brad - that looks like close to "great exercise" or was it a case of "value for money"? Always potential for getting trapped with the sprocket lock tabs, need to un-lock them to check the nut tension, but the tab did it's job for you. I would say you made "value for money" with the sprocket and pads, as long as you were carrying spares of course?

Good advice Dr B the long distances of continuouse riding really does test the bike out , i changed out my rear pads about two rides ago and thought i had everything smiko but still managed to boil the rear brakes on the HRC pre ride because of the MANY long down hills sections ( no comp breaking on a two banger ) .  Shocked

So i drained and changed out the fluid in the front and rear, ripped out the pads and checked and gave them both a scuff up, checked the rotor for distortion and luckily all was good.

HOPE YOU PUT A STEALTH SPROCK ON THE WR  Grin

100k from camp is a long push.

Got the stealth on here are the combined shots looks allot better.

Old rear pads

New rear pads

Old front sprocket

New front sprocket

And I thought I did enough maintenance, not true on this occasion. Hope this helps to remind folks to be prepared for High Country styled riding.

Yep pretty bad its amazing how quick it wears when on the way out. Still had all 13 teeth, the brakes were just as bad will bring the remains around next meeting as a show of what NOT to let it get to.

When it comes to the motor and gearbox I leave it to the experts and do the rest myself if I have time which I can usually find.

Makes me think how many people do this kind of maintenance themselves vs getting a bike shop or other outlet to do it for them?

You'd be surprised how many bikes in scrutineering we find with suspect wheel bearings that turn out to be wheels that have been improperly fitted by bike shops. Don't assume that because a bike shop has "prepared" your bike for the HCR that she's good to go ! Roll Eyes

You are correct Wiggy there are those who know and many who have no idea.
Checked all the wheel bearings which are fine recently replaced them with sealed ones.
I didn't have the time to do the rest and got the Dandenong experts to re-grease all the others.
