A silly question perhaps, but what is going to happen to all the posts in the old site - will they be copied to the new one?

No, they won't be copied and transferred.  There's 8 years of posts and that will kill the new site!

There will be a link on the new site to the old site, so you can still visit it, but it will be a READ ONLY site.

If you want to take anything off the old site, simply cut and paste it onto the new one.
